RID Certifications Available

National Interpreter Certification (NIC)

The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) offers nationally recognized certification to both Deaf and Hearing interpreters. Those who attain this certification can take their credentials anywhere in the United States and be assured that their credentials will be accepted. 

RID created the Center for Assessment of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) to develop, oversee, and administer exams for both the National Interpreter Certificate (NIC) and the Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) credentials.

EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment)

The EIPA is a tool that evaluates the voice-to-sign and sign-to voice skills of interpreters who work in the elementary through secondary classroom using videotape stimulus materials and a procedure that includes a comprehensive rating system.

EIPA Written Test and Knowledge Standards

Brenda Schick, Ph.D., working with the EIPA Diagnostic Center at Boys Town National Research Hospital, has developed the EIPA Written Test and Knowledge Standards. This comprehensive multiple-choice test evaluates the interpreter’s understanding of information that is critical to performing with students in an education setting. The test consists of 177 questions and takes approximately one and a half to three hours to complete. This computer-based test is administered through the Internet. A passing score on the EIPA Written Test is not needed in order to take the EIPA Performance Assessment.

EIPA Performance Test

The Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) is a tool designed to evaluate the voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting skills of interpreters who work in the elementary and secondary school classroom setting.

The EIPA evaluates the ability to expressively interpret classroom content and discourse and the ability to receptively interpret student or teen sign language. It is not limited to any one sign language or system. EIPA is used to evaluate interpreters who work with students and teenagers who use predominately American Sign Language (ASL), Manually-Coded English (MCE) and Pidgin Sign English (PSE); and EIPA-CS is used to evaluate interpreters who work with students and teenagers who use Cued Speech (CS).
