STAFF ASL INTERPRETER

Society’s Assets, Inc. is seeking a qualified individual to work as a
Staff ASL Interpreter
Wisconsin Telecommunications
Relay System in Middleton, WI.

General Information
The Staff Interpreter is primarily responsible to interpret between staff members, interpret relay calls and to interpret during meetings and education/outreach activities. The Staff Interpreter also performs a variety of job functions in order to provide an optimum level of relay customer service. This position requires travel and schedule flexibility. Interpreting settings include; on-site, outreach presentations, meetings and training sessions both on and off site.

Qualifications
- Minimum of an associate’s degree required
- Minimum 3 years of experience in interpreting
- Knowledge of Deaf Culture and the Deaf Community
- National certification from NAD and/or RID preferred
- Observe NAD-RID’s Code of Professional Conduct
- Strict adherence to the company’s confidentiality policy
- Ability to communicate effectively on the phone and in person
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Basic data entry skills and knowledge of a Microsoft Office Suite software preferred
- Experience in public speaking

Director-DeafLink

POSITION SUMMARY: Incumbent is primarily responsible for: 1. recruiting, supervising, directing, training, monitoring and evaluating all DeafLink direct service staff, support staff and interpreter service contractors,  2. managing the day-to-day operations of DeafLink, 3. expanding and enhancing services provided by DeafLink and 4. conducting DeafLink program evaluation.

EXPECTED RESULTS: The efforts of this position should result in: 1. DeafLink meeting or exceeding output and outcome results targeted in the program’s outcomes based evaluation system, 2. generation of fee-for-service income at levels projected in the DeafLink annual budget, 3. establishment of video remote interpreting (VRI) service as a fee-for-service addition to the program’s interpreter services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Service Delivery 

                     Provide sign language interpreting services for the League and entities in northeast Indiana on an as needed basis, and appropriate and available;

                     Investigate and resolve all service delivery related complaints;

                     Make arrangements for sign language training classes;

                     Oversee the implementation of all aspects of the League’s VRI service plan;

                     Coordinate the League’s community activities efforts with regard to issues faced by people who are Deaf and those who are hearing impaired;

                     Provide information and referral assistance;

Public Relations/Marketing

                     Inform consumers, businesses, government entities, and social service entities about the services provided through DeafLink and the service benefits;

                     Assist in establishing, maintaining and increasing the number of traditional interpreter service and VRI service purchase of service agreements held with community entities;

                     Maintain positive relationships with the Deaf community, community entities that hire DeafLink interpreters, interpreters, co-workers, other professionals, and state funded community agencies for the Deaf in Indiana;

Administrative and Clerical

                     Implement the League’s case coordination procedures, policies, and operating procedures in a manner consistent with the League’s vision, mission, values, beliefs and independent living philosophy (as identified in Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended);

                     Produce periodic progress reports and statistical data, as requested by funding sources and League leadership;

                     Monitor DeafLink program/services on a regular basis in order to ensure that the program produces high quality services and results that, at a minimum, are at levels projected in program’s outcomes based evaluation system;

                     In cooperation with the League’s President/CEO, annually develop/revise the DeafLink outcomes based program evaluation system;

                     Develop and implement methods that promote continual quality improvements within DeafLink and the League;

                     Provide policy and procedure recommendations relating to the DeafLink Program, as needed;

                     Record community activity and information/referral services delivered in the League service management information system;

                     Perform clerical duties associated with the position; 

 

Financial          

                     Ensure that the annual generation of  fee-for-service income through sign language interpreting, case coordination and sign language classes is at levels projected in the DeafLink annual budget;

                     Monitor and adhere to established DeafLink budgets, including special projects budgets;

Planning           

                     Assist the President/CEO in League the planning and development of DeafLink program and community change activities;

Personnel        

                     Assess the skill levels of independent contractors who are available to provide contract interpreting services through DeafLink;

                     Secure the services of qualified independent contractors to provide sign language interpreting services;

                     Provide for support, guidance and skill development training to area interpreters that work with DeafLink;

                     Conduct recruitment and interviewing activities, and makes hiring recommendations for all vacant DeafLink service staff positions;

                     Provide orientation for new DeafLink staff members, and provide/coordinate ongoing training for DeafLink staff;

                     Supervise and provide overall coordination for DeafLink staff and service contractors;

                     Evaluate performance of all DeafLink staff;

                     Annually review and, as needed, modify DeafLink staff job descriptions;

                     Initiate corrective actions for DeafLink staff related, as needed;

                     Maintain a positive work environment;

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises three to six DeafLink staff members, and fiftee to thirty independent sign language interpreter contractors. Carries out all supervisory activities in accordance with the League’s policies, procedures, written agreements, and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS and DEMANDS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative, and include the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities that enable them to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: RID certification and a bachelors degree in a related field is required. Extensive knowledge of the Deaf culture is required. Extensive knowledge of, and strict adherence to the RID interpreter Code of Ethics is required. Knowledge of, or ability to learn federal, state, and local civil rights provisions and support systems available to people with disabilities required. Prefer a qualified person with a disability.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Excellent receptive and expressive sign language skills in American Sign Language, and ability to translate/transliterate.  Familiarity with exact English, and manual codes for English.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of consumers, DeafLink business customers, and community groups. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common professional journals, financial reports, legal documents, policy and procedure manuals, and business and professional letters. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Excellent written English spelling, grammar, and sentence structure skills required. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the essential functions of this of this job the employee is required to: 1. regularly talk, hear, use fingers, hands, arms, facial expressions and “body language” to communicate,  2. regularly use fingers, hands, and arms to manipulate objects, 3.  frequently sit, stand, and walk, 4. occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and, 5. use close vision skills.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION REQUIREMENTS: Ability to independently operate TTY,  video phone and voice phone. Ability to independently operate, or learn to independently operate League office equipment, such as fax and copy machines in order to perform job related duties and assignments.  Ability to independently operate, or learn to independently operate the League’s computer network and software in order to perform job related duties and assignments.

TRAVEL  REQUIREMENTS:   Ability to travel independently: 1. frequently throughout the League’s service region and, 2.  occasionally in intrastate and interstate regions. Must have access to reliable transportation on a 24 hour per day basis. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

WORK SCHEDULE DEMANDS: Must be available for work during agreed upon scheduled hours. Must be available evenings and weekends as work demands require. Must be able to respond to interpreting emergencies 24 hours per day, seven days per week, as assigned in an emergency response schedule rotation.
