"Ethical Fitness for the church Interpreter" Presented by Gina Harker

Through lecture, small and large group discussions and activities, participants will define “ethical fitness”; identify and explore various elements of ethical fitness for interpreters; name various decision making models within the field of interpreting; review research findings regarding decision making and conflict theory within the interpreting profession; engage in Ethics and Decision Making Circles, a process that incorporates integrative communication strategies that emphasize active listening skills and developing empathy; hone critical thinking skills; and identify strategies for applying components of this workshop within daily work. We will have a Question and Answer period conducted in a live panel format. In our time together, we will explore the concept of ethical fitness and apply it to our work as interpreters. In an environment of collegiality and mutual respect, we will identify the various parts of an interpreters’ ethical fitness, dig more deeply into some of those areas, and engage in discussion that will lead us to a deeper understanding about ourselves as ethically fit interpreters.
