How do I hire an interpreter?

Typically, interpreters are hired through an interpreting agency, that is, a company that deals exclusively with providing interpreting services, whether sign language, or other spoken languages. If an interpreter is needed for an event, appointment, class, etc., the company, organization, or indidvidual who is paying for the interpreting services will call a local interpreting agency and request and interpreter. It is usually a good idea to put in a request well in advance of the event, class, appointment, etc. That way, the agency has ample time to line up the interpreter(s) for the assignment.

What interpreting agencies are there in Indiana?

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), a division of Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) in Indiana provides a complete list of all the interpreting agencies and other resources for the deaf and hard of hearing in Indiana. To see this list in its entirety, click here.

Who pays for the interpreting services?

According to Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the entity providing a service (such as medical attention, legal counsel, financial advice, etc) "Furnish Auxiliary aids when neccesary to ensure effective communication, unless an undue burden or fundamental alteration would result." Interpreters are covered under the term "Auxiliary aids". This means that, for example, if a Deaf person needs to go to the doctor, the doctor's office must arrange and pay for the services of an interpreter if that is what is required for effective communication to occur between the medical professionals and the Deaf patient.
