Maintaining your Certification

An important part of being a Certified Interpreter is maintaining that certification through obtaining CEUs or Continuing Education Units. Below is the information you will need to obtain CEUs in various avenues. The links for the various forms are below each heading. All forms are in PDF format.

RID Sponsored Activity

1. Register and attend an RID sponsored event.
2. Sign in on the Activity Report form– this requires your signature and your RID member number.
3. Fill out the workshop evaluation.
After the workshop, the CMP coordinator receives evaluations and activity report forms. These are sent to RID
within 30 days for CEUs to be applied. If you do not see your CEUs applied within 45 days of the event,
please contact the CMP coordinator at:cmpind@hotmail.com.

Academic Course Work

This does not have to be specifically related to interpreting, but must have value to you as an interpreter.
1. Provide documentation that the college or university you are working with is accredited through the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
2. Provide course documentation: a course description, outline, or syllabus along with the Academic Coursework Activity form prior to taking the course.
3. After the course is completed, submit a copy of your transcript.

Academic course work form

Independent Study (IS)

This includes things such as: a trip overseas, a comparative analysis of two languages,
a book study, or a discussion group. IS activities are limited to a maximum of 2.0 CEUs.
1. Contact the sponsor to discuss your ideas for your IS and determine possible CEUs to be awarded.
2. Submit the completed Independent Study Plan to the sponsor prior to the event.
3. After completing your IS, submit the supporting documentation outlined in your IS plan within 30 days of your originally stated completion date..
4. To ear CEUs the IS must be completed within one year of the original paperwork submission.
5. Independent Projects must be completed within 12 months.

Participant Initiated Non-RID Activities (PINRA)

These include any workshop, in-service or lecture series that will be beneficial to you as an interpreter. These do not have to be specific to the process of interpreting.
1. Submit a PINRA Activity Plan and Report form to a CMP Sponsor prior to the event. You must attach documentation such as a promotional flyer or brochure with the Activity Plan and Report form.
2. After the even, submit proof of attendance, i.e.: flyer, certificate of attendance or handouts from the event.

In all cases, after all documentation has been submitted, the sponsor will file the paperwork with RID for application of CEUs. Any other questions regarding the earning or processing of CEUs can be directed to: cmpind@hotmail.com.
