Marvin Marshal Scholarship

The Marvin Marshall Scholarship is named in honor of a great friend, organization member, and contributor of the Indiana Chapter of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (ICRID). Mr. Marvin Marshall, formerly a resident of Carmel Indiana, has contributed countless hours of volunteer service to help establish ICRID as the primary state organization for working interpreters, students of American Sign Language and interpreter training programs, Deaf consumers and friends of the interpreting profession in Indiana.

Mr. Marshall has been honored nationally for his contributions to ICRID and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). He was always a key figure to the success of ICRID, and it is for this reason the Marvin Marshall Scholarship was established in his honor. This scholarship will finance the RID registration fees incurred by candidates for national certification.

The Marvin Marshall Scholarship will be granted in the form of a voucher for use during a one year period following the date of the voucher. This voucher will be presented annually during the ICRID annual conference. Candidates who have been granted a voucher will be reimbursed for costs incurred from taking the national performance test(s) by the ICRID treasurer. Reimbursement will be sent upon receipt of proof of registration, proof of payment for the appropriate performance test(s), and proof of taking the appropriate test(s).

The candidate does not have to pass the RID certification performance test(s) or the EIPA performance test to receive financial reimbursement from ICRID. A candidate not passing the performance test(s) may reapply for future consideration. This is no guarantee he/she will be granted any additional scholarship monies. All decisions of granted scholarships made by the Scholarship Committee are final. ICRID members wishing to serve on this committee may contact the Scholarship Coordinator.

Two scholarships will be awarded annually to applicants who have totally met all eligibility requirements. The Scholarship Committee will review all submitted applications twice a year; April 1 and October 15. Any paid member of ICRID and RID, currently living in the state of Indiana, is eligible for this scholarship. Required materials needed for consideration of this Scholarship are as follows:

A typed letter of intent explaining the reason he/she should receive the scholarship. Letters of intent should emphasize education, interpreting experience, and involvement in RID and ICRID. The letter must also identify the test(s) for which the candidate is applying.

A letter of recommendation submitted by a nationally certified interpreter.

A letter of recommendation submitted by a Deaf consumer.

All materials must be submitted to the Scholarship Coordinator via US Postal Service. Completed sets of materials will be processed by the Scholarship Committee. Incomplete sets of materials will be sent back to the candidate noting reason for incompleteness. All candidates must hold dual memberships in ICRID and RID to be considered for this scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will evaluate each set of materials based on these primary and secondary criteria:

Primary Considerations:

Amount of education, interpreting experience, and involvement in ICRID, RID, and the Deaf community.
Quality of interpreting as described in the letters of recommendation.
Indications of commitment to the profession of interpreting.
Secondary Considerations:

Correct grammatical use of written English and business format of the letter of intent.
Active membership and participation within professional interpreting organizations such as
RID and ICRID.
Verification and/or clarification of letters of recommendation.
ICRID has pledged its ongoing support of Hoosiers seeking national certification. The ICRID Board recognizes its responsibility to assist members wanting to become certified interpreters. ICRID realizes the importance of supporting its members who so graciously contribute their time and talents for the advancement of the interpreting profession in the state of Indiana.

For these reasons, ICRID is pleased to sponsor the ongoing funding of the Marvin Marshall scholarship. Contact Dave Calvert for more info at terp06@aol.com
