Awards & Scholarships –
Submitted by Dave Calvert, Chair
In 2005,
the ICRID
Awards and
Scholarship Committee was again evaluating a capable candidate application for
the Marvin Marshall Scholarship. The committee is pleased to announce that the
candidate is a student at Goshen College
ITP.
She has passed her RID written test and is now a candidate for the RID
performance test. This bright student will receive the Marvin Marshall
Scholarship during the ICRID business meeting this fall at the IAD/ICRID Joint
State Conference in Richmond, Indiana. Also, five (5) ICRID Board Awards will be
given at the conference.
President Judy Cain has selected her President's Award winner. He/She will be presented with the beautiful award during the business meeting. No Report
Fundraising
– Submitted by Dave Calvert, chair
The ICRID Fundraising Committee is still reeling from a record
fundraising year in 2004. The committee raised over $35,000 for the 2004 RID
Region III Conference in Indianapolis. This will be a record to someday be
surpassed by another group of enthusiastic grant writers. Dalonda Young needs to
be praised for her efforts during 2004. She was diligent in securing grants for
ICRID and that conference. In 2005, the Fundraising Committee's focus has
been on the IAD/ICRID Joint Conference. ICRID is the sole grant writing entity
for this conference. As of
9-13-05,
the committee has raised $12,000 for this conference with some grants still
outstanding.
The ICRID Fundraising Committee is one of the most important committees within the structure of ICRID. Without the efforts of this committee, ICRID would not have the capital to fund workshops, The Annual Spring Retreat, or the fall conference for its members. If anyone, with grant writing experience, wishes to join this committee, he/she would be warmly welcomed. The work to secure grants is not an easy task and we are always looking for others for additional assistance.
At the 2005 IAD/ICRID Joint Conference in Richmond, I will be presenting a workshop on basic grant writing. The participants will actually be writing a small foundation grant during the workshop. Grant writing is the life-source of any non-for-profit organization. The more ICRID members who learn this technique can only help ICRID grow in the future. Please help ICRID continue to be financially solvent.

Road Trips are going
well In Indiana
-- A coalition of agencies/organizations is coming together to
travel the state and exhibit
their
booths at 12-15 different locations in
Indiana. We give presentations and updates on the services that the
organizations have to offer. The coalition is made up of: Sprint Relay,
Indiana Telecommunication Relay Association Corp (InTRAC), Indiana Association
of the Deaf (IAD), Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), Outreach Services
of Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) and Indiana Deaf Heritage Inc. (IDH). We
present what IAD, DHHS, and ISD can do for the people in
Indiana
and Sprint provides refreshment during the events.
Our
ASL
classes are doing very well.
-- IAD offers three semesters each year of American Sign Language classes. These
classes are open to the public, and include a workbook and video all for a
nominal cost. Our Teachers are ASLTA certified and very experienced. This is
the major source of income for IAD every year and ASL classes have contributed
to strong financial independence for IAD. IAD
has website.
IAD’s website provides
information on available resources. Please visit our website:http://www.indianaassociationdeaf.org
ICRID Historical –
Submitted by Judy Cain
This committee was up and running with a very competent and motivated
chair, Holly Miles, but unfortunately Holly and her husband, Stan, relocated to
Tampa, Florida for Stan’s job and Holly had to resign as the chair. The
committee has not been very active without a chairperson. If you would like to
serve on this committee and help compile the wonderfully rich history of ICRID,
please contact Judy Cain at
cainterp@sbcglobal.net.
Membership
– Submitted by Randy Nicolai,
Chair
As of
October 11, 2005,
ICRID has six (6) Organizational members and 181 Individual members. Thirty-two
(32) former members have not renewed since October 2004 and 15 since March
2005. Along with the January / February 2006 issue of the newsletter, I will be
sending letters and membership applications to those members whom have not
renewed by then, hoping they will renew.
The committee revised the membership application early in 2005. We will look at revising it again to have continuity among all the media the application is currently available on, i.e., application form, newsletter, and website.
The senior citizen membership rate of $15.00 will be continued this year. Also as a reminder to educational interpreters working in a school/cooperative that is an Organizational member of ICRID, there is a $5.00 discount available to maintain, or initiate, an Individual membership with ICRID. However, the school/cooperative MUST provide the Membership Committee Chair with a current list of working educational interpreters. There are currently four (4) schools/cooperatives which hold Organizational membership. Randy Nicolai drew a name out of a pool of people who referred new members. Myron Yoder won a free ICRID membership.
Newsletter – Submitted by Nancy Young, board liaison
INSights is published and mailed to members six times a year. This past year the ICRID board nominated the INSights for the RID Silver Scribe Award which is awarded during the national conference. Unfortunately we did not win the award this time around but we believe our newsletter has grown bigger and better over the past year. The board would like to encourage members to submit articles of interest, news of upcoming workshops or any bits of information for print. We are in the beginning stages of researching the idea of having the newsletter sent to members electronically so that we may save on the cost of postage. The board hopes to have more information on this for the membership in the next few months. We want to encourage members to join the newsletter committee to submit articles and/or to assist with proofreading the newsletter or to help with the stamping, labeling, and mailing of the newsletter. If you wish to submit an article, place an ad, or have any questions concerning the newsletter please feel free to send Mary a note to dmriccius@kconline.com.
Professional Development – Submitted by Carrie Westhoelter, CI, CT, IIC, chair
As Chair of the Professional Development Committee and Board Liaison to ICRID, I am pleased to continue to serve as the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) Administrator. This year, the RID PDC conducted an audit of the ICRID CMP (all CMP Sponsors go through an audited every 3 years) and I am proud to announce that we passed with a rating of “Superior with Special Recognition.”
We have had another excellent year of participation with an increasing number of requests for CEUs earned for VRS training. With the opening of a Sorenson VRS Call Center in Indianapolis, we have received 17 Participant Initiated Non RID Activity (PINRA) requests to date. Other continuing education activities requests for 2005 are as follows: Sponsored workshops – 5;
PINRA – 24;
Independent Studies – 1;
Academic Coursework – 9.
Also, ICRID was proud to sponsor the 2005 Indiana Deaf Educators Conference where 42 workshops over two days allowed for numerous CEU opportunities for our Indiana Educational Interpreters. Thanks to Amber Bahler and Diane Hazel Jones at the Indiana Deaf School for collaborating with ICRID to make that possible.
Ways & Means – Submitted by Bob Canty, chair
Lynn Frye and I audited the ICRID's treasury’s financial records up to July 2005. Research was done for a new credit card for officer's use and the use of Pay Pal for taking care of revenues on membership dues, workshop fees and other income in ICRID's treasury. The committee decided that we should go ahead and have the Pay Pal put on trial for one year.
Website – Submitted by Nancy Young, board liaison
Since our last annual meeting the opening page on the website was reformatted with the hope of making the website more user friendly. The ITPs now each have their own page within the ICRID website to highlight the programs activities and events. Dalonda Young, our webmaster has been networking and sharing information with other RID affiliate webmasters to find ways to enhance our website and seek out possible technology grant opportunities for server costs for the website.
The workshop and events page is now categorized as national, regional, state, and online opportunities. A suggestion was made to the board about a calendar format and that is now a reality. The new format offers members a quick look at the month for possible workshop and event information. A suggestion was made to Dalonda that ICRID consider the possibility of online advertising for the website. Dalonda has received a few inquiries from individuals and companies with an interest into online and print advertising opportunities on the website. Should you wish to post any information or have any ideas/suggestions for the website please contact Dalonda at dalonda@kuntrynet.com
Satellites
a. South Bend –
This year’s report is a little more like a recap! I believe I can speak for many of the interpreters in the northern part of the state in thanking ICRID for supporting the notion of a satellite group and its endeavors to provide quality, affordable workshops specifically for working interpreters. At this point, I have been able to organize a variety of workshops every year since the satellite’s inception:
Computer Terminology presented by Jay Krieger, 2002
Mental Health Terminology presented by Jason Maloney, 2003
Legal Interpreting: Civil Matters presented by Anne Orozco, 2004
Wholey, Holey, or Holy? presented by David Evans, 2005
Honing Your Fingerspelling & Number Skills presented by Elizabeth Beldon, 2005*
*October 22
Since our first workshop I have been able to maintain an affordable registration fee for each workshop which averages about four hours. The range has been anywhere from $10-$30. Our upcoming workshop is $30.00 for a 6 hour workshop. This is quite a deal! Even more importantly has been the steady and increasing numbers of participants. Our first workshop in 2002 had 19 participants and the most recent workshop in May of 2005 had 42! Overall, the feedback I receive has been very positive and the workshops seem to be satisfying the needs of the interpreters.
The other important factor in providing workshops has always been the budget. The workshops were never intended to be huge cash cows for ICRID. Fortunately, I have been able to apply and receive small grants aimed at serving such situations as ours up in this area; that being serving the rural interpreters. The grant’s restrictions require tight budgeting and very little profit. Once again, this satellite has managed ICRID’s money well! The first workshop was the only workshop that ICRID had to actually pay out-of-pocket--$157.39. Every workshop since has either broke even or has made a marginal profit for the organization: $95.26 (2003); broke even (2004); $757.30 ($500.00 grant award). The secret has been working with local talents and trying to keep the budget small. Now that I have the whole coordination of providing these opportunities systematized, I am hoping, with ICRID’s continued support, to begin coordinating two workshops a year. Most of the “regulars” expect the May workshop but this year I am adding an October date. If this time frame is well-received, it may become another coveted ICRID workshop date.
It is also important to thank Bethel College’s ITP faculty and staff! They have supported ICRID in allowing me, as the Satellite Coordinator, to utilize the facilities, equipment, and personnel’s time in this process.

c. IUPUI ITP – Submitted by Kathy Baumann, IUPUI Student Liaison
What is new in the IUPUI ITP? Well, everything. For over a year the ITP lacked permanent leadership. The 2005/2006 school year began with a new director at the helm. Adjunct instructor Vera Masters was hired as the new director in August. The struggling programs enrollment spiked from five (5) seniors to 13 juniors. IUPUI also welcomes back adjunct instructors Julie Armstrong and Darin Turner. The practicum requires 120 hours. IUPUI has continued their partnership with Deaf Community Services (DCS). DCS interns must have take the RID written exam. Pass or Fail, the student will be considered for as a intern. Over the summer four IUPUI students participated in the ICRID study group lead by Rebecca Buchan. Two students have taken and passed the RID written. We salute Jenni Thomas-Moore and Emily Karsh for a job well done.
